I'm using openSUSE 10.2
I downloaded jre-6-linux-i586-rpm.bin and followed the instructions to
install. So I changed to su ,without that it did not work,
several kernel patches.
Otherwise use google ... there are quite a few pages writing about this topic.

If you want to use tomcat with apache you need to install the rpm

a package needs Java = 1.5.0 it's always possible to use
java-1.5.0-devel as a BuildRequirement.
Using -source 1.4 -target 1.4 would make 1.4.2 compatible class files --
granted ... but it would be necessary to adjust every java spec file but
the ones that need Java = 1.5.0 ...

jpackage, i.e. it should hopefully not be to problematic to use their
