If it helps narrow down causes, I noticed that encrypted adhoc + wpa2 stopped working for me on AA r36682 (albeit not using batman). I had the same problem; unable to see any other stations on the adhoc mesh using 'iw wlan0 station dump.' r36682 does coincide with a hostapd update pushed to the
