I had a situation yesterday where a rogue process wrote millions of
error messages into the alert log. I was able to get rid of the process,
then delete the error messages out. But it would have been quicker to just
blow it away and create a new, empty one. I was

If you delete the alert log and Oracle needs to make an entry thereafter the
file will re-appear all by itself.

I can't comment on the accuracy with respect to Unix as don't use it.
Under NT as others have said you can j

since those are two separate operations. I can loss a message or two if

If you mean, "Can the alert log be renamed for archiving purposes
while the db is up?" the answer is yes. Oracle will just recreate
the alert log the next time it needs to write an entry to it.

I believe that a dedicated window running
tail -f 10 /alert_log_filename
will keep an eye on the last 10 lines of the
alert log in Unix/Linux.

Last week I was bit by a corrupt block on an index. I run Analyze every
week which I found has been blowing up for some time due to the block
corruption. Since Analyze does not create a log I did not know the Analyze
was blowing up. Now I know that there are messages in the alert log that
bounced the database. We are also
investigating a possible 8.1.7 bug related to ORA-04031 errors.
My question is this: Why didn't we see any ORA-04031 errors in the
alert log? None registered in our alert log throughout that period.
Anybody know what the deal is?

I had the same error once. I never did figure out the exact cause.
What happened to cause this was a problem with creating a log file.
The file was created but the instance did not get the proper indication
that the file was created. So I had a number of error messages telling
me about that pro
apologies to everyone who I've led down a blind alley. The archive location
does have the SID in the directory structure. I removed it in the email as
it is the name of a client. Sorry for that !!!

\archives\sid name\.arc.
