Hello Viateur and others,
What is written about 'potting up' sounds very much like it is
actually horsemanure. We see that it is 100% organic, is lightweight
and effective in the ways that horsemanure is.
Can anyone tell us what 'Potting Up' is actually made from? My guess
is that it is actually

Let's think about how a shade cloth works - light reflection
and absorption: Most green and black clothsabsorb far more than they
reflect, which results in the generation of a considerable amount
ofheat. As part of the use of a shade cloth is to reduce the heat

Thanks Kathy, for going to the trouble of posting that book-list.
I certainly can see what the AOS is getting at ... any centre that had
all those books would be quite well set up for references on 90% of
the species they were likely to encounter. I've got a couple more
questions: (a) Which ones

Most of the new greenhouses I've visited recently seem to favor internal

the transmission properties of polycarbonate?

Lisa,
All of our greenhouses have the shade cloth

Oh, I see... "100% Organic" includes the
inorganic mineral diatomite?
(Yes, I know the source of diatomite, but it's taking an
awfullybroad definition of "organic" to include silicon dioxide. - Sorry,
it's that materials science background coming back to haunt me

Hi everyone,
I've got a Phal Orchid World with yellowing of the leaves from the stem
juncture outwards, not extending all the way to the edges of the leaves.
Texture of the leaves is still good. The plant is potted in sphagnum,
and I have no reason to believe there is trouble at the roots. I

Julia,
Yellowing of the leaves from the stem outward usually indicates a problem in the stem. In my experience it has usually been a rot that starts at the base of them stem and moves upward. I have "rescued" one or two of these by removing it from the pot and cutting off the base of the plant
RE: Shading, internal or external?
I used black and green saran shadecloth, externally mounted, for a number of years. Then I switched to a white saran or nylon cloth. The white cloth was noticeably cooler. For the past7 years I have used Aluminet. It is much more effective that any of the other

Paul,
I'm not sure that it really started in the center, just that the
yellowing does include the leaf abscission zone. But I'll pull it out
of the pot and check out the situation as I didn't really pay attention
to the progression of the discoloration.
Thanks much,
Julia
Well, I have some experience, but from a VERY warm place. I live in Rio

daughter studies in Long Island).
When you put your shade outside, you have much more temperature drop,
but you face some temperature drop with inside

Hello,
I thought I had saved some of the links to sites people had suggested for
researching readiness times for species seedpods, but they are gone. I'm
wondering about onc. leucochilum finish time for dry seed, and if anybody
has an address to some of the seedpod sites I would appreciate it
re the question posed regarding the use of inside shade cloth.
I have used aluminet on the inside of my greenhouse for 3 years. I was
forced to place it inside because of the difficulty of positioning it
on the outside as the greenhouse is on a second floor terrace. I have
no problems with it

I don't believe you said that in public, Nina. Shame on you for agreeing to

At shows, there are often NO research materials at all, except for AOS
award descriptions (no photos) on Wildcatt.
Last year I wrote about a seller on eBay that was auctioning mass quantities
of Cypripedium acaule. I'm talking about up to 15 lots of 300 plants,
along with very large quantities of smaller lots. Their seller name is
kyatvrider, which I interpret to mean Kentucky All-Terrain Vehicle rider.
