Perlite is primarily silicon, volcanic in origin 'puffed' by rapid heating.
The resulting material is then crushed into the desired size (a more scientific
Does anyone out there know the correct EC and pH levels for watering
orchids? I use tap water, Dyna-Gro 7-9-5 and Pro-Silica. I then let the 70
litre barrel sit for a day before using it to water my orchids. This is to
let any chlorine in the water evaporate. Any help will be greatly
appreciated.
While it may vary from plant to plant, I find that a pH in the neighborhood
of 5.8 to 6.3 seems to be a pretty good, general target.
As far as the EC is concerned, that will depend upon several factors, such

I also grow and bloom Oeceoclades roseovariegata successfully, but I
have killed two Oeceoclades spathulifera plants. Despite having
killed two of them, I'm not sure why. The plants simply shed their
leaves, and then the pseudobulbs shrivel. In contrast, O.

Hi FOLKS!
The info on Epi. ciliare was very helpful, thanks to all.

I believe it was returned to Neolauchea by most authorities.

Reservoir gets final permit
Environmental groups plan to challenge the approval of the project in
federal court.
The Army Corps of Engineers signed a permit ... that allows Newport News to
build a reservoir that will supply 20 million gallons of water daily to
more than 600,000 customers ...

Title: Re: [OGD] NZ sphagnum moss
Depends on where you are from, I purchased my New Zealand
Sphagnum from these two web addresses in the last two years. I usually
purchase a quantity of supplies at one time so I save on shipping
costs.

I have ordered sphagnum moss from from
http://www.losvolcanes.com/spmoss.htm every year for the past 6 or 7
years. They ship very fast and don't require you to prepay for the
goods. But their moss is from Chile though, not New Zealand. >From my
experience, their Chilean moss is of high

Most of us know the hazards of blue asbestos, but
what is the medical comparison to perlite? Even commercial barks have warnings
about health hazards, including Legionnaires disease! Some grades of perlite
here in Melbourne appear to be fairly free of dust so need no sieving to remove
it.
I am trying to avoid the use of sphagnum moss
forseveral reasons:
1. it deteriorates over time and can then destroy
roots of orchids
2. when used alone, it is difficult to remove,
especially from fine roots as in maxillaria
3. sphagnum moss is getting expensive, and
harder tofind a source
