Friends, Superb info arriving both on and off line. Will try to summarize in near future. Discussion seems combined with cheap, throw-away Taiwanese or other mass produced hybrids. Has anyone notice slugs emerging from these plants? That was my first suspicion, but dreadful wet weather may be the

Jim, You may have to go back to the old standard metaldehyde, to kill them.. I gave up on the organic version several years ago, when my plant summering outside got a major infestation and I had slugs eating leaves and flowers all over my greenhouse in the Fall. The only thing that stopped

I am a big fan of iron phosphate as a slug control. It far outperforms anything I have used previously, "organic" or synthetic. That said, its effectiveness is limited to slugs. Snails are not as attracted to the bait. So...over the years, slugs have declined in my garden, but large snails, the

Hello Jim, Have you thought of testing some applications of caffeine  on the medium of some of your plants. (Incidentally, coffee grounds alone, as a repellent around the perimeter of your growing area or your greenhouse, may only have a marginal effect.) But tests using 1% and 2% solutions

I've had good luck keeping down snail populations with horticultural grade Diatomaceous Earth used as a preventative. It's not a quick killer, but will kill most insects and snail/slugs through dehydration. I apply it to my plants at the rate of approximately 2 tablespoons per pot every othe

Hi, Marianne; I trust your reference below was a typo, and you will be looking for Mesurol. I concur with Iris that this seems to be the only stuff which works with bush snails, but it seems to have disappeared off New Zealand shelves, too. Someone just told me that it should still be available
