All paper-like substances have their merits, challenges and
suitability. I too have pushed copy paper (because sometimes that is
all I have access to) beyond what it was designed to be used for but

The rattle test:-
Hold the paper by one corner and rattle it. If it doesn't rattle much, don't
fold it.
(This is, of course, just a general rule of thumb. The real answer is, as
you say, 'Depends')
I like white office paper because
1. it is always available,
2. it can be made into a square easily,
3. it folds nicely for an easy/intermed origami model.
4. it is relatively cheap
When I am teach origami to a beginner, I like to use paper that is different in

I would suggest that 'square' is important. For beginners plain white
printer paper, cut square should be fine. Colored, if available is even
better
