Yep, or someone could make a business selling them :)
So are there any shortcomings of existing adapters which would be worth

The 2490 only cost me $16, but I think this is interesting because it

The hall effect based ones are safer for large currents (such as in a
PV system) because they are isolated. You have to be careful with shunts
to avoid ground loops.

I use JrSXs, at $90 from http://www.norhtec.com/products/mcjrsx/index.html
they use 2W, use any 5V supply, have serial and USB ports and run linux
off a compact flash card trivially. They have ethernet and svga.

I would run a separate power up, make sure the supply is floating - don't
form a loop in the power and signal grounds. You can fairly easy dumpster
dive for 5V small output switchmodes in the 10W range.
You can test the usefulness of the idea with a 5V battery supply u
.
No idea, but I just used some LEDs as minisolar panels and a resistor to
make it a current source. The current from an LED is very nearly
proportional to the number of photons.

of course get them as samples directly from maxim-ic.com. If they're

soldering a DS2450 is going to be a doddle.
Then there is the i2c m
