I would (tentatively) suggest you investigate a CMS like DotNetNuke (.net) or
Joomla (php) rather than spend your time reinventing the wheel.

nopcommmerce supports downloadable purchases as part of its commerce side.
Has an inbuilt blog and forum engine.
Is currently open source (may have a pay feature in future).
If you check their forums they have developers available to customize or
setup a solution for you.
