right. GRIN It's Easy CD-DA Extractor, from www.poikosoft.com.
As for a portable player that plays FLAC, the Victor Reader Stream will
do so. I'm sure there are others.

Three programs come to mind. These are Roxio Easy cd and dvd creator, Nero,
and a very accessible program called Premier. Out of all three programs, I
find premier to be the most jaws friendly.

these files, I have to increase the volume a good bit to get to the
same level as, say, an Audible file. Is there a CDex setting or a
utility by which I can increase the volume of a file batch?

I've found the free program MP3 Gain available from
http://mp3gain.sourceforge.net
works well when you want to increase the volume of several MP3 files.
MP3 Gain is also very accessible. I hope this helps.
