a Rar is probably a compressed archive. It's an alternative to the .zip
algorithm. Get the Winrar programme mentioned in the post above to
uncompress/extract .rar files.

Is WinRAR no longer free? I looked on that site, but everything I saw
seemed to indicate that it's "paid!" All I saw were "trial"...leading me to
believe that WinRAR is no longer a free program!

If you have 7zip, which is free, it'll open .rar files.

I've heard of 7 Zip; I tried to get it from that Ninite site. However I am
finding no link to download it, so am obviously missing something there!

with ninite all you have to do is download the installer for it and run
it. we're kind of leaving the topic of audio here so i won't say more
than that. but ninite is very easy to use. check the box for the program
you want, press the get installer button and on the next page will be a
link to
Try 7 zip. It works well and is accessible.

WELL, I THINK YOU ARE SUPPOSED TO PAY FOR IT, BUT I'D BEEN USING WINRAR FOR
YEARS ON MY XP PC AND JUST SKIPPING OVER THE NAG SCREEN.

While I had my other machine (an XP machine) I had it and don't recall ever
being prompted to pay for it! I got 7Zip, so will just see how that works
out for now!

Friends, I'm using a trial version of PowerDVD9. it's very
accessible. however, I'm wondering if it's worth spending my money on
the full version or PowerDVD14?
i'm using jaws15.
same as winzip in the old days. I never used 7zip much...winrar provides all
my archiving needs; can even do .zips instead with the mere activation of a
radio button. i have found that rar is a superior archiving format, though
of corse it won't do you much good with mp3s and such unless you wan
If you mainly want to play DVDs, who knows. Yes 9 will play BDs too, but as
the keys update you may have to upgrade if you care about BD to start with.
BD is Blu-Ray Disk BTW. There's also the fact that 14 maybe worse then 13 in
accessibility. I should check it out before going firther though. But
do you think its worth upgrading?
I've not used the software before so can't comment, what does the upgrade offer
you that the trial doesn't?

Oh yeah, another thing. Do you care about 4K? if not, who knows again.
Dain's right. It depends on what you needed it for. I had to because of
wanting to be cool and getting Win 8, and because I do play Blu-Ray disks.
Also, I'm a home theater geek and though I can't see it, I do care about 4K.

For DVDs especially with Win 7 you have 2 players built in already. Windows
Media Player, and Windows Media Center. Only Downside is you have to use
Narrator. Perhaps NVDA might work. It's the mirror driver that causes a
problem. Damb it MPAA! Windows thinks Jaws is going to capture the movie and

on some dvd's i get a message about updating my video card to play

4K is a screen resolution. It's 3840 by 2160P. There are new TVs that will do
it and PC monitors too.

Yes this is the problem I'm talking about. Solution, shut off Jaws and use
Narrator. Or perhaps NVDA might be able to work.
