I had this problem intermittently with my first MX, it was because the
damping foam around the focussing screen had deteriorated and turned sticky.
Now and again it would be sticky enough to catch hold of the mirror and

got first and fourth place in the news photo category and second place in
photographer's portfolio (small weeklies division). The convention was fun
as usual, but not nearly enough free beer this year ...
