My black MX serial number starts with 9. It has the
AOCo logo and Asahi Pentax on the pentaprism. Asahi
Opt. Co. is engraved on the back of the top cover
under the film advance lever and on the plastic
rectangular film tab holder. The shutter lock is all
metal. The battery cover is engraved BATTER
<- OPEN.

I have chrome copies with 43* serial numbers and a black with 44*. Both have
Pentax on the face of the camera above the lens mount and a small Asahi
engraved on the sloping front portion of the pentaprism. Film holders are
rectangular with Asahi Pentax embossed in the plastic at the bottom.
Maybe the number between 4* and 9* were for another model ?

Nice try, Paul . My black bodied MX is #4***
What is more interesting to me is that the only numbers that have
appeared for MX bodies are either in the 4*** series or the
9 series. Does anyone have an MX with numbers somewhere in
between?

Apologies Juan, that was the impression I got.
So maybe the 9xx numbers are for black MXs and the 4xx are for
chrome ones?
If this holds true I wonder if this is the same with other bodies of
