Hi ...
Sometimes the scanning times can be a lot slower, at least that's what I
read recently. I don't know if the Minolta allows for either SCSI or
USB, or just USB, but for now USB is acceptable as I won't have to
upgrade my old hand-cranked computer with a SCSI card, which is what I'd
have to
My S800 prints at 1200x2400 and i'm very happy
with it

Hi Bruce ...
Nice shot! How many kids do you have - 3?
As nice as the shot is, it's only marginally helpful since it's done on
chromogenic B&W. I'm really interested in seeing scans made on regular
B&W neg film. Gedfrey's got a few on the Minolta test pages I posted
earlier.

Hi Bruce ...
I found a site with some scans made with the Minolta. In case you're
interested:
http://www.bayarea.net/~ramarren/photostuff/mintest/minolta-test.htm
The scanner is looking better and better as an entry level unit.
I'm going to look at your PUG entry now. Yeah, you should have
Kevin,
Don't forget that you are scanning a 1 X 1.5 inch piece of film.
Unless you only want contact prints, you will start using the
resolution as you blow up the image.

The printer dpi ratings have absolutely nothing in common with scanner
ratings. The Epson 1290 will do a magnificent job of printing scans from this
Minolta. In fact, the 1290 will do even better if you can scan at 4000 dpi.
The printer ratings are only a reference to the steps of the printhead. T
0 ppi, which is then printed at the 1440 or 2880 dpi by means of
the printer driver.

Shel,
I have done a few rolls. My entry in the current PUG was done on it.
If you want, I can look back and see if I have anything else to show
you. You'd think with all my computer work, I would have a website,
but, alas, I only get around to things as demand rears it's ugly head.

I have the LS-30, which has a film holder much like the LS-1000. The
film holder scans one-at-a-time, requiring removal and repositioning

Thanks for the information, Bruce. See my note in reply to Paul's
message - the Minolta seems like a good alternative to the LS-1000.
Have you done any B&W neg scans with it? Are they up somewhere?

Hi Paul ...
At the moment I'm not looking to make prints, just to learn scanning and
get some more photos on to my web site. I've been practicing with a
Coolscan 4000 - that's the one you suggested - and I'm leaning in that
direction for the upgrade. But, until I know better how it, and a

Thanks for the pointer. I'll watch that auction until I learn a little

About 13 seconds to startup the software (Nikon
software), 23 seconds for a preview, and about 55
seconds for the final scan at a size of 5x7 inches and
200dpi; is slow to me. Granted this is an older

Shel,
For what it is worth, the Minolta Scan Dual II can scan up to 6 frames
at a time automatically. The cost new on this unit is under $400 and
runs on USB. It scans at 2800 dpi. Batch scanning is one of the
reasons I bought it.

Sorry to answer in bits. I scan B&W all the time in 8 bit, er 256 shades
of grey. That gives a file size of about 8 MB at 2700 dpi. Others have
scanned B&W in 'color' but I don't understand why, removing the colour
info in Photoshop does the same thing and remov

Actually, I have boobd there. I've just remembered it was slow(er) with
an older Mac I was using with it. But I have recently acquired a 'Blue

Hi Shel,
I have the LS-1000 as my only neg scanner. I find it a very capable unit,
if a lttile slow by today's standards. 2700dpi optical is nothing to
sniff at, and will easily give 25 MB files sizes (colour) from 35mm
frames. The neg holder is a bit fiddly, but at least most of it is metal
