Image quality from my FA* zoom is the standard that I base my opinion of
all other zoom lenses.

I once to felt the same way. Until I got my FA* 80-200mm f2.8.
I tried Rob's FA 200 f2.8 when he was here, and IMO the quality of the
images from the 80-200 are so close to those from the FA 200 f2.8, that I

Personally, I almost always use prime lenses. For events, I tend to
pick one focal length and stay with that for the whole event. Indoor
