On B&W film the colors are represented by grey tones.
Red darkens foliage & dramatically increases contrast in cloudy skies.
It lightens skin tones in portraiture.
Orange is similar to red, but not quite so much.

Ann - the image was given basic levels adjustment etc and then I let
loose Silver Efex Pro on it. Did a bit more local adjustment until I
got it the way I wanted.
