I spent a month in Australia in 2006. I found myself using my widest
lens for capturing the immensity of the place. The other lens was my 77
for portraiture and available light.
I only got to visit Adelaide, Cairns, and the Outback (Uluru,

The Jupiter lens are quite good. After the 2nd WW russian had access to
the Carl Zeiss Jena factory and they copied a lot of CZJ lens. So far I
know the 135mm Jupiter is almost just a rebadge of the famous Carl Zeiss
Jena Sonnar 135. I don't know about the newly made versions, but one

If you are not a big pixel-hunter and satisfied with the 18-55 then you
might want to take a longer zoom. I am thinking to buy the Tokina 80-400
since it's quite light and the pictures I saw with it are quite nice.
Also the reviews I read were positive about the lens. Since I am pleased

Sure there are used ones available. KEH.com sometimes has, (though the
really desirable ones like the FA 135 seldom stay listed for long), the
and e-bay will have them often, where of course you'll pay a premium,
gone are the days of regularly finding bargains there.

I don't mind at all. You'll have to find someone willing and able to
loan it to you, of course.

I had one for quite a while and found it an excellent performer
overall. What I never really liked about it was the somewhat loose,
wobbly feel of the focusing ring and resulting imprecision when
focusing manually, particularly for settings near infinity. It was

It's really too bad that the FA 135 2.8 isn't available any more. With
the DX format, it's a sharp, fast and light telephoto. I never used
this lens much with film, but it suddenly, uh, fills the same place in
my heart as that FA 200 2.8 I used to covet so much. It's odd that it
rarely gets ment
I agree that a longer lens is most useful for some of the animals in the
reservates. Besides the 16-45 I used mostly my 50-200 on my trip to
Australia more than a year ago. Some of my pics from there with both
lenses are at

The difference is due to the magnetic fields affect on the light rays coming
into the lens.
All lens elements are ground different
Corey: I have the DA* 50 - 135 & I really like it. I just posted a GESO of
4 informal portraits & all 4 photos were shot with this lens. Cheers,

Corey,
I like the A35-105 as a good performer if a bit heavy.
You might like a faster wide prime 28-31mm or even 50mm.
On an OZ & NZ trip in '06, I mainly used the DA16-45 zoom.
You can see the results in 6 Picasa web albums...
The ones shot Oct 28, 2006 thru Nov 17, 2006
http://picasaweb.google
DA 16-45 or 16-50
...or if you're satisfied with the 18-55
DA 50-200 or 50-135.
I think if your just going to see the major landmarks, favour the wide
lenses. But when you hit the zoos/wildlife preserves you'll want
something longer.
Cheers,
Dave
