I have been inside the spottie already (to clean and lube the shutter
spindles), but never yet under the top cover.
The battery chamber I checked first, then I checked the connection

Before removing the top, did you check the bottom? If it is like the SP,
there will be a contact for the battery compartment mounted on the casting.
Check this first.
If the meter does not respond at any shutter/film speed setting, then the
coil in the meter is open. I believe circuit is a bridge
