As soon as I saw the subject line I thought of Julie Andrews (and that's
not something I'm comfortable owning up to). But obviously, you thought

Anyway - great light in the colour images and not too orange by any

Not sure about the B/W one. It loses a bit of detail

Nice rainbow pics, well framed against the skyline. Worthy of a frame, I'd say.

I don't really see orange, just a beautiful low sun light.
Yeah, BW contrast does cloak the building detail some.

Nope. I looked at all the images of sun dogs, and it wasn't such a phenomenon.
These were stretched out, kind of ropy alto-cumulous clouds, lying
side by side, until stretched by upper level winds.
They looked like long strings of homemade sausages run over by a roller,
and then stretched out
Hi Keith,
It was probably a sun dog. They are beautiful.

Just the other day, I was driving home from somewhere, and saw a streaky
batch of brightly lit, late-in-the-day cumulus clouds, with reds,

Thanks to all who replied, I don't have a polarising filter just yet and the
widest lens I have is a 28mm. I shoot negatives most of the time. The
rainbows I've seen here appear at any time so I will have a couple of
chances to get it right. Will post if they successful.
Thanks

Hi All,
Its summer right now and it rains every second day or so. Today I saw the
most perfect rainbow, didn't have my camera with me as I was driving, and it
was gone in a few minutes anyway. But it will come again.
Any tips for shooting rainbows, exposure times, film etc
Thanks

rainbows, exposure times, film etc
I can't remember if you are supposed to over expose or underexpose to
get better saturation in rainbows, it's one of the two. This is why
bracketing was invented.
Technical bits about rainbows
Rainbows are formed at an angle of 42 degrees at your view

underexpose on slides and use a saturated film. that works for shooting
rainbows on waterfalls.

Hi All,

Hi Leon,
I know that is the norm with rainbows, but I had one at high noon once.
It was a very flat bow. Just happen to snap a pic of it.
I also had one that didn`t reach the ground because it was very early in
the morning, it was a slight double.

Steve,
That was probably not a rainbow as such but a circumzenithal arc or
similar. There are lots of atmospheric phenomena that look like
rainbows which aren't. If you get enough altitude and are lucky enough
early in the morning (or late in the evening) you can get close to a
full circle

I usually start by spot metering on the rainbow itself. I put that at +1
(ie overexposed 1 stop) as a starting point. I adjust that as necessary
depending on how the surroundings

You should underexpose a meter if your using a conventional in camera
