My DVD drive is only a 4X drive and upgrading to something faster and newer
seems in order, especially now that the hard drives are almost full.
What's ~your~ suggestion for a high quality internal drive? What, if any,
software issues must be taken into account? I'd like to continue with the
curr
NEC DVD burners or the best if all you'll do is burning. The read OK.
LiteOn burners do burn well but read VERY well.
Sony's are Liteons with Sony on it and 2x price.
TDKs/memorex ... are all rebadged Liteons.
Others I do not know well enough.

Shel, these are now a commodity item. I had been thinking about
replacing my CD writer with a DVD writer, but didn't know
prices. Then my son came up with one from Aopen (Taiwanese)
priced at $50. So I got one too. It is so wonderful to have DVD
if one has many gigabytes of photo files.

I've got one (Sony) from BestBuy a couple of weeks ago when my old one
(for which I paid something like $300) croaked. $50-60 sounds about right

of my TV screen, and I've watched a few movies on it. Last night my DVD

Like I said, $60 was Sony; it doesn't get any brandier than that.
They all are made in China (or Malaysia), probably on the same factories.
By the way, my old one (also Sony) was made in Japan and it croaked
after 3 years of use.

Any 16x drive currently on the market should write Dual-Layer, It's the
8x's that may or may not. I've got a Lite-On internal 16x that writes
Dual-Layer and a LaCie 8x external that does as well (The LaCie is an

I noticed that the error rate is not that low:
Error Rate
Mode 1: 1 block/10^12 bits
