You don't have to put in a new cartridge, you can take a crystal cartridge apart, throw out the Rochelle salt crystal and put in a "modern" crystal from a 50s-6-s era crystal cartridge. I've done it successfully several times. The only alteration to the old cartridge is that you might have to use
