Aha. Found the pattern. I had launched with compositing off, and then turned it on. toggling on/off afterwards works fine as you've stated GTK doesn't detect this properly. So hopefully we can ask GTK to pretend compositing is off when not in gnome, and with Oxygen the header doesn't even look to
