Thanks Alex and Brien: I will try the rename suggestion. In .mozilla, I found 24882 pending crash reports dating back to March 2013, about 24000 of them from two days in April 2015. Surely there cannot be any good reason or benefit in cluttering up the system with all these ancient crash reports

Joe -- I know that Mint is built on Ubuntu. This post seems to suggest its been an ongoing problem: http://askubuntu.com/questions/254724/firefox-constantly-crashes-no-log They suggest: Make sure Firefox isn't running. Then rename ~/.mozilla to something else and see if Firefox still crashes.

Try clicking the help ? Button then troubleshooting information. Then try the refresh Firefox button. If that doesn't help you could rename the hidden Firefox folder in you home directory. Might be .mozilla Maybe you could create a new user and see if that user has issues, then you know it is y
