I do have 3 questions though...
1. There is some confusion on my part if there is a workaround to

Before I frustrate myself silly trying, is it possible to get AlienBBC
working on my Mac Mini Core Duo?
The following line from the MPlayer download page of the AlienBBC
website sounds ominous:
These binaries are built on Mac OS X for the PPC platform. They will
not work on Intel-based Macs.
I recently set up a Squeezebox and slimserver together with AlienBBC on
my sister-in-law's new Intel iMac. I followed the standard
instructions for OS X (ignoring the warning you refer to) and
everything seemed to work first time.
On occasion, the radio streams seemed to stutter a tiny bit more
For a while at the beginning of the year there was no version of mplayer
available for OSX at the right level to play BBC live streams. The
version on the AlienBBC sites was built by a user.
Now I believe there is a universal binary on the

Thanks very much for the responses, folks. Things seem to be much
simpler than the last time I tried this on a PC - however, I still seem
to be one step short of success...
Process so far:
- Installed AlienBBC, MPlayer and LAME.
- Restarted Slimserver 6.5.1 nightly.
- AlienBBC menu appears OK
A little more info: when I try to play Five Live and the data stream
starts, my CPU jumps to around 50% for the perl process, which looks
good. However, I don't have an mplayer process.

As I remarked earlier, the actual mplayer file is deeply hidden inside

There is a README.txt file included with each zip file that gives you
some sort of introduction.
You should get two new menus, TrackStat and Dynamic PlayLists, in the

One thing I've noticed - I've set the screensaver to kick in whilst
playing (AlienBBC). But once the screensaver is displaying, no button
press will take me back to the Squeezebox menu, unless I red button
'power off'.
