Got it working!
I did a bit more searching based on the log
"MPlayer interrupted by signal 13" and discovered that other owners of
DLink Routers ( I have the DIR-655) have been having problems with the
way RTSP interacts with its Application Level Gateway.

got the address but for some reason nothing has been received from
mplayer.

I have tried multiple times to implement various solutions, including

Can you see if I have made any
SSODS/SSOTS is a special build so the SSODS/SSOTS instruction must be
applied first and usually instead of the generic AlienBBC instruction
detailed on the Wiki.
In particular the custom-convert.conf seems to have mplayer.sh which I
think is not to be used with SSODS/SSTOS as per the instruction
I have installed 7.0.1 on my QNAP 109 using the latest firmware from
qnap, that allows for SSODS (beta 13) and the installation of Squeeze
Center (7.0.1).
