I was using Safari 4 initially, but kept getting the failed download.
Used Firefox 3.5 and it downloaded okay. Didn't start automatically

successful when it was ran.

Well, good news, last night I clicked on the SoftSqueeze 3.9b1 app icon
in the dock and lo! it downloaded the file from the website. Double
clicked the downloaded app and it works fine.
Now I've done nothing to the Mac since my last posting so either it is
magic or maybe bpa has been moving in my
No, 7.2 wouldn't work on Snow Leopard and had to be replaced with 7.3.4
as documented in the SqueezeCenter forum. My initial post was therefore
correct, that SS 3.9b1 wouldn't work on 7.2 under Snow L but incorrect
since SC wasn't working either.

No, the previous installation of 3.9b1 was on Leopard not Snow Leopard
so probably irrelevant here.
I'm sure that you are right about the security problem but all I'm
using is inbuilt rather than specified by a firewall. I agree that it is
very strange that two near identical downloads work diffe
The basic problem is that the webstart application cannot download the
jnlp file when it is presented as an URL. This URL is found in another
html page which presents the checkboxes on the Squeezecenter Softsqueeze
page.
So the problem is odd that two files in the same directory, served by

With my limited knowledge of the inner workings of OSx it seems that
both have the same permissions. My problem is that the WebUI of SC7.3.4
offers a category called Extras; clicking the Install button on SS3.7
results in a download of a .app whereas the same action for SS3.9b1
fails. The last tim
There is no difference in the contents of the files between 3.7 and
3.9b1 just the location of the source files.
IS there a difference in owner or permissions between the location of
softsqueeze.jnlp for 3.7 and the softsqueeze.jnlp for 3.9b1.

At a guess the problem seems to Java Webstart and Snow Leopard and some
sort of configuration issue perhaps security.
You should first check other boards to see if there any known Webstart

Opened the configuration menu and it is indeed 3.9b1; so far so good. So
how come I can't download the .app to fire up the player?

As a test to see if SoftSqueeze actually run on Snow Leopard can you doi

1. Open Terminal window
2. change directory to the directory containing SoftSqueeze.jar. On
Linux it is a subdirectory of the Cache directory such as

I have seen something similar on Windows caused by security s/w.

OK, it's becoming a little clearer. First I needed to install
SqueezeCentre 7.3.4, now done this morning. Sorry but I hadn't tried the
Squeezebox proper and then discovered that I needed to update SC.
Then used the Extension Downloader to get Community SoftSqueeze and it
shows up in the Extras li

I know but the OP has installed 3.9b1 which comes as a plugin.
I'll need to look at the jnlp files.

SoftSqueeze is no longer part of SBS 7.4.

Softsqueeze hasn't started yet - Webstart cannot open the jnlp file.
The JNLP file describes how to download Softsqueeze and then run it. It

The 3.8 packages on sourceforge were built with 1.6 and the windows 3.8
package with jre is bundled with java 1.6.
Softsqueeze runs fine for me with jre 1.6 both on windows and linux, so
it's most likely an OSX issue.

Seems that Apple have moved to Java SE6 with Snow Leopard and people are
complaining. Maybe they will fix the problems in the first update
together with Flash which went backwards.
Perhaps I'll just sit tight. One day I'll learn not to update software
until version .1

I have been using Softsqueeze 3.9b1 successfully on my Mac for some

work (in any of 64 bit, 32 bit or Rosetta modes).
Any tricks? Or alternatively, is there a prospect of an update? I know
