I finally sat down last night to set my 5300 for use on my home network,
only to realize that I don't know what I'm doing.
This is a bit embarrassing, as I have set up hundreds of pc's for this same
thing, and had no trouble at all doing so with my eMac, in both classic and
ten.
I found the

I saved the settings, but it did not appear
ping it... uh. can you do that in mac os?
For Classic MacOS, download a util called WhatRoute, for ping/trace
etc.

pcmcia ethernet with xjack connector 10 bast T ethernet card., model xj10bt?

Try just selecting either the generic pc card modem or the Microcosm
Deskporte fast 28.8 modem in the control panels.
And I think that should work so you will have no need for the drivers.
