OK, I've read over the comments and have a few more questions.
First as much as I can figure out to tell you about it at the moment:
It is a 5300cs (what is the cs for btw? I thought color screen at first, but
then noticed that there was also a c)
It's Running Mac OS 8.0
It has a 750 meg HD
Strange. I'm running a 1400 on OS 8.1 as well, upgraded the same way. Yes, there is
supposed to be a trackpad control panel. I'm not sure why you don't have it.

I've been trying to charge two batteries with no luck so far. The lights
start out yellow (as you mentioned) with a steady
flash flash flash, but after a few hours the yellow flash sequence
changes to one normal speed flash, followed by four
twice-the-speed flash's. The charger continues
Now my update:
the screen is now fine! (?) all prior negative symptoms are at present not
there!
I have no idea how this happened, except (I speculate) heat, and the need to
cool down as contributing factors. Is this a collateral symptom of the Dark
corners syndrome, Mad Dog?

Tom is right. 802.11a is newer than b. WEP is a joke. Thats why you should
always put access points outside your LAN. Unless you like people browsing
your shares..
