Well, since not everything can be working at once, here's my latest problem:
The AC adapter for my PowerBook 520c is acting funny. I have to turn
the brick upside down and set something on the end where the cord
plugs in to, or it starts to make a buzzing/sparking noise and it
starts to smell sort
I am buying a different PowerBook in February, and I am trying to
decide which model. I know I asked before but I have different needs
now.. Here they are:
Here is what I would use it for:
SimCity classic
SimFarm
SimAnt
Windows Media Player 7
Trying to learn C++
Word processing
Ocasionally use
Good Luck

Yeah, spend the $50 on cheap drugs or perhaps a balaclava.
Seriously, I have a Lombard that I got for $150, and I love it. I
would recommend it over a wallstreet because it's much lighter,
faster, has usb and scsi. A good battery lasts about four hours in
mine.
In your price range, you might get a

Apologies to all for not clipping the quotes on the above message. I
was using the gmail quick reply and didn't see them.
Well, I don't do drugs. So the cheap drugs would be out of the
question ;). I was thinking the 3400c, but I'm assuming I'm not going
to get one for under $50. My second choice would be the 1400c/cs but I
was wondering if I could get anything better. Being able to read
CD-RWs is not extremely
John,
I've gotten several 1400's for about $10-$20, but they were all As-Is. I've
been lucky that all of 'em worked, but I wouldn't count on getting a good
1400 at that price.
Seems to me like the going rate for 1400's on E-Bay last time I checked was
in the $80-$150 range, so that's pretty

I've never seen the 1400CS screen (all mine are 1400C's), but I imagine it

Actually, the 1400cs is the active-matrix screen; your 1400c IS
No no no no, the 1400c is active matrix (TFT) and the 1400cs is dual scan.

And here's what I want when it comes to features:
Internal floppy drive
Internal CD-ROM drive that can read CD-RW
800x600 screen (preferably TFT but it doesn't have to be)
Nice keyboard
Working battery
You're not gonna find anything like that for anywhere near $50, but
decently configged

If $50 is all you have to get a book? and you are really serious
about it i would hold off and save a-bit more because that will only
really cover the postage for most of the decent books. Even if you
can get a 1400 or even a 3400 for that Then i would assume that it

If you have the box open, have you tried plugging it in
(carefully!!) to see if there's an arc or an overheated
component? Consider doing this... draw some output
current from it for a few minutes... THEN UNPLUG IT
and carefully touch some components to see if they
are hot. As a rule no
I agree with Vicki on this one. If you're really serious about a good
'Book, save up a little and get a Lombard or Pismo, at least. I know
that when I finally replaced my 190 with my Lombard, I never looked
back. Get something that can run OS X, IMHO. It's worth it.

Heh, I ran a PowerBook 190 until last month, so I think I'm beating
you. Personally, I think the Lombard and Pismo are much nicer than the
TiBook, but that's just my humble opinion.
As far as OS X goes, Jaguar isn't too bad, either. I've had good luck
with Jag on my Lombard 400, but that's
A 3400c will do all those things, but you'd be lucky to find a good one for
$50 or less, even now. They're still nice machines and quite useful, eight
years after they were made. I still use my hacked 198 MHz 3400c quite a bit,
and have even gotten OS X to crawl on it.

Um, well, curiously, why would anyone run an old 'Book as their main Mac?

To be honest, as everyone knows, my main Mac for a while was my 190,
but now that I think about it, I had to use my PeeCee for so much back
then that the 190 never saw any serious duty as anything other than a
word processing machine. Now that I've gotten my Lombard, I don't even

I agree with Caleb 100 per cent. A Lombard, for the price, is a great
laptop. I love the 4-5 hours on a battery as well as the speed and I love
how easy it is to upgrade compared to the ibook. It's a little more than

I paid $230 for mine with 192 MB of RAM running OS X Jaguar and it had
Office 2001 installed, so it wasn't a bad deal. Plus, I remember there
being some G4 upgrades for the Lombard, also. Plus, with the nice
1024x768 screen and the 512 MB RAM limit, it's really a good budget
'Book.
