Watch LIVE baseball games on your computer with MLB.TV,
I have a 5300c that came with 8.6; I wanted 7.6.1 and a HD with two
partitions. I used Apple's drive utility to create two partitions but
accidentally made one HFS+ and didn't notice until I had 7.6.1 installed and
got the Where have all my files gone deal. I installed 8.0 - same
situation -
As I was about to do a clean install, the screen went
on the fritz again. So I hooked it up to an external
monitor -- working fine. No problems at all. We took
apart the 3400 that has been having intermittent
display problems and checked the display cable
carefully (doesn't appear to be damaged.)
Help! I was merrily surfing along this evening and
suddenly, my display just faded right out to white. I
immediately restarted the machine, and it was booting
normally, but the screen went crazy, banding and
flickering, and briefly showing a normal display, then
banding and fading out to white.
I was too tired last night to go through much beyond
PRAM, but today when I turned it on, it began to show
digital garbage -- not graphic, then suddenly when the
Mac OS 8.6 screen came up, it was fine. It
continued to boot and acts normally. We're going to
take it apart this weekend anyway, and
can anyone give me comments on the following drive
utilities? I am wondering if any of the following
programs will allow me to format an external usb HD as
FAT32 (a pc format, I know, I know) from a pb 3400 or
iMac running 8.6 (If you really want me to go into
the why I will...)

Hello H:
In my experience, if the hard drive clicks on
startup, then it is
probably damaged.
Not startup, you got it. Actually, it seems to work
fine with any software that is already loaded. I am
trying to add a few new programs, and it doesn't like
that. Sometimes it also hangs
the end of checking the
media it too got stuck, clicking. I think the drive
may be shot. If I can't run a disk diagnose, should I
even bother trying a clean install or a reinit?
Advice? Thanks

Hello all!
We had a power outage here today, and I was on the
3400, typing. The 3400 was plugged into the wall
through a surge suppressor. When the power came back
on, I plugged the pb in again. It won't take power

ac adapter. It still
fineĀ and now I have two PowerBooks
instead of just the one.

Dave:
Since Drive setup detects the CDrom OK, but the CDrom doesn't mount,
I suspect you don't have a CDrom driver to support that CDrom drive.
I also have a a PB 520 and two non Apple (NEC and Toshiba) external
CDrom drives. The CDrom drivers from, MacOS 7.6 support many non
Apple CDrom
Try it without the battery.
Absolutely. The exact same thing happened to my 170 after running Battery
Amnesia. It ruined the battery completely. Take out the battery and run
it from the power cord; I bet it will work fine.

No bother at all, Nancy. I'm glad it is up and running!
For configuration information, you might want to look here:

and

You can download the configuration information there that works on my 170.

This is just a theory:

Does anyone know which version of Open Transport can be installed on a

1.1.1. and 1.1.2 can both be installed with System 7.1, but you must
upgrade your RAM to do it. OT cannot run on a system with only 4 megs of
real RAM. Under those conditions, Classic Networking (MacTCP/ConfigPPP
I don't know off the top of my head if it is compatible (probably not),

I may be mistaken regarding PowerBooks on this one, but:
My belief is that AppleTalk, Classic Networking, and Open Transport are
all independent of one another, and do not need each other. I use an
AppleTalk network which includes 68K machines that have neither Classic
Networking or OT on
1. Is there any way to gain access to the hard drive -
bypass the lock?
Try depressing the shift key while the machine is booting. The start-up
screen should say, Welcome to Macintosh, Extensions Off. This is the
equivalent of safe mode on the PC.
2. If not, where can I download boot
