5300 partition problem

I have a 5300c that came with 8.6; I wanted 7.6.1 and a HD with two partitions. I used Apple's drive utility to create two partitions but accidentally made one HFS+ and didn't notice until I had 7.6.1 installed and got the "Where have all my files gone" deal. I installed 8.0 - same situation -

As I was about to do a clean install, the screen went on the fritz again. So I hooked it up to an external monitor -- working fine. No problems at all. We took apart the 3400 that has been having intermittent display problems and checked the display cable carefully (doesn't appear to be damaged.)

Help! I was merrily surfing along this evening and suddenly, my display just faded right out to white. I immediately restarted the machine, and it was booting normally, but the screen went crazy, banding and flickering, and briefly showing a normal display, then banding and fading out to white.

I may be mistaken regarding PowerBooks on this one, but: My belief is that AppleTalk, Classic Networking, and Open Transport are all independent of one another, and do not need each other. I use an AppleTalk network which includes 68K machines that have neither Classic Networking or OT on board.
