Same thing happened when I swapped out the original drive for the 6
GB IBM TravelStar. Turned out to have been a termination problem. Try
removing the termination to the CD-ROM if it's on or adding a second
termination if not.
However, all is not running entirely smooth. I get a happy face
I'd like to have some idea what each of my 5300 batteries hold. Is
there a standard for testing how long a battery holds a charge? ie,
I'm 'assuming' that a processor-intensive function would drain a
battery faster than simple word processing.

I ran into this exact problem this morning with my 5300cs, swapping
out the Apple-branded 500MB drive for a 6GB IBM TravelStar. The Apple
Authorised Repair shop didn't notice that the TravelStar had no
jumpers on either the slave or the master so nothing he did, made the
drive visible. He
Thanks for the links. These are text files that open fine if dropped
onto BBEdit. No solution to the password problem, though. I wouldn't
even mind reformatting the disk and putting a fresh system on it
before it goes in for the REA but even that doesn't appear possible.
