When my wife's car was broken into, our PLPD insurance wouldn't cover
anything, nor would homeowner's insurance. Homeowners would have
covered anything in the car stolen of value not attached to the car,
including CDs, but since the car had a CD player (stolen as well), the
CDs went uncovered.

This is typical, actually. When I had almost my entire CD collection
stolen from my car the police said they would do nothing about it, even
thogh it was more than $1000 worth of CDs- most of which I can guarantee
that the thieves would not want anyways, and most likely threw away.

But call them anyway and get a police report for insurance purposes,
or maybe it can come off your taxes, or something. At least it adds to
the statistics of the whole scene, and when it gets bad enough maybe
someone will do SOMETHING about it.

Good story, although I still feel bad for the guy who that his Powerbook
stolen in the first place, and it disgusts me to hear about police
wouldn't "have time" to investigate personal property theft. I can only
imagine how good this guy felt when he DID get his Powerbook back.

Quite the lucky break. The best piece of advice I ever got was to use a
lock, and password protect everything. At login, the password question
can be "reward for return to " or something of the sort. No matter
what you do though, most of the time when it's gone it's gone for good.
