I too am a new user, but I had an experience that may relate to what you
have described.
I loaded a base map. I then loaded a shape file from the local Regional
District. I right clicked on that layer and selected "Set Project CRS
from Layer". And the base map vanished!
I finally
datasets effectively, like the Fresh Water Atlas (FWA) or
the Digital Road Atlas (DRA) to get started!
Also note that the latest Canvec 50k dataset for "most" of BC contains the
contour data found in TRIM BC - another bonus!

Canvec v10 (the Fed 1:50k data), and named the same on the BC 1:20k
