Or maybe the Coordinate reference system (CRS) of your tiff does not match the one of your map and therefore it gets reprojected by QGIS? Check the Information tab of your tiff layer properties (CRS) and your map projection in the lower right corner of the QGIS main window. Raymond On

It sounds like the image has "pyramids" which enable the system to allow for faster navigation and rendering by creating a "cache" of lower resolution copies. If Image quality is important you can remove or adjust the pyramid settings depending on your needs, but it will likely impact system
