surely it will be fixed eventually right?
I wouldn't count on it, the problems have been here since the Radio was
released, they did some improvements a few months after the release but
after that nothing has happened as far as I know.
However, with a local server
You have every prerequisite to have a reliable alarm.
Report back if you get into trouble (which I don't expect) and we can
analyze the logs to find the causes.

I completely agree with you on both counts! I despise local AM/FM radio
and Logitech has done a piss poor job of marketing their entire
SqueezeBox line in the US.
Walk into any Best Buy store (guessing the biggest in-store retailer of
SB players) and I defy you to even find the players on the

Just got my new Radio, great piece of kit so far, much smaller than I

I got the free accessory pack with it, probably won't use the battery

Wired and local server should be pretty reliable. My alarm has only
failed completely two or three times in the near two years I've been
using the radio and then the problem was due to a power cut in the
night (which took down my server). I have heard the unbelievably loud

I'm using a wireless setup with BBC Radio 2 in the UK as my alarm. It's
been very reliable on the whole save two issues...
1. SBS is running as a WHS app on my WHS 24/7 and even though the
option to start SBS when the physical server starts this always fails
after a windows update that requires

The annoying fallback alarm is easily replaced. Use WinSCP or ssh to
login to the Radio, and replace the file
Ok all this has got me thinking. I might cancel and get the SB Boom now.
It's not a great deal more expensive and I'm looking for reliability so
the extra money would be worth it, if it's a better product overall. Is
it?
Plus I thought it probably sounds better with 2 speakers over the
radio's

The Booms alarm in my opinion is much more unreliable.
Sure - if everything is ok it will sound an alarm (as will the Radio),
but if something is wrong (server connection or stream) it will
silently fail, where the Radio has a much better fallback mechanism.
Indeed - most people complaining about
In my opinion the Boom sounds a lot better than the Radio. I have never
used the alarm, even though mine has been in my bedroom since I got it
nearly 3 years ago.

One more suggestion in terms of alarm reliability - make sure the sound
you choose for your alarm is a local file on your server. I originally
used something from the Sounds and Effects menu, and my alarm was
reliable ~80%. I turns out these sounds are actually hosted on

I have used the Boom as an alarm reliably for just over a year. The
audio stream is set to a URL of the local NPR station. This recently
started failing, but I can watch the Boom alarm trigger, then connect,
so I believe it is the stream that fails. Of course, the Boom can't
detect this failure.
Thnks for the help guys all now working perfectly.
