I have the same problem on my UE Radio / Squeezebox. I used a cleaning product with something in it, either alcohol or bleach. Sadly it was fine for 10 years before I tried to clean it :( I'm thining what about some large shrink wrap tubing over it then heat it up with a heat gun or hair dryer

I used a mixture of 90% Propan-2-ol (Isopropyl alcohol), and 10% deionized water to clean a Touch remote control that I accidently left in the freezer for a few months. Had to take it apart, and it needed a fair amount of rubbing, but it looks brand new, now.
