I have the patch for doing that trip. Aside from the merit badges, you can
earn 50 mile patches for both hiking (got that one too for a week long backpack
on the Long Trail in VT) and cycling. (Both cases as an adult leader with the

I'm looking for 30mm tire that is good for both and doesn't disintegrate in
my garage or puncture every 10 miles. Probably should stick w/ Paselas, but
I want just a bit more volume than 28mm, and
David,
What rim are you using? We need to know because every tire is
slightly different width depending on the rim. A 28mm tire is not just
28mm. I wish manufacturers would say when they give a tires width
it's xx mm's wide on a xx mm wide rim.
That said, after 3 or 4 pairs of tires

Jim I could use some clarification. The XR's lowest pressure

I'd go by what's printed on the tire. I always rode mine at approx
40-55 psi on Velocity Dyad rims, and I'm pretty sure I experimented as
low as 20-30 psi with no obvious problems. I think 70 is too much for
my tastes, rides rough, etc. I'd also shy away from going down to 30
on narrower rims.
I tried Ernesto and quickly gave up on it because when it came off the
chain as the chain spun, the oil and gunk would adhere to the rear rim
and spokes and was a bear to get off. It mostly came off when it rained.
I used the regular procedure of oiling the chain and then wiping it with

Peter White in a thread on his forum recently opined Schwalbe's higher
recommended psi is too high by 10. He did not say anything about
underinflation that I am aware of.
Like you, I would be concerned about going as low as 30 on a smaller
rim.

I've used both tires albeit on differently sized rims (XR 26x50 Big
Apple 700x60)
The Big Apple works well at a variety of pressures, though at the high
end, you lose the benefits of fat tire suspension.
I really like the XR's for snow riding and dirt roads. I use these on
my Surly Big Dummy
Marathon Supremes in 50mm are great. They are lighter than Big Apples
and roll really well. I've been running these on my Bombadil on road
rides up to 54miles and will use them on an upcoming 3000 mile tour.
They are very nice.
Supremes are amazing tires. They do not have a bottle generator
Curious,
but not enough to take a tire off this moment.
