James: Thanks for the tip on the 1991 catalog(ue). I just read it, and
liked it, on Sheldon Brown's site. Interesting to read Grant's thoughts on
frame flex / planing: "The frame is a spring. Like a sprung wooden floor or
a diving board, it flexes and repays energy on the rebound."
As for the 1
I've had what appears to be that very same stem (though silver) on the
MTB-turned-urban-assault-vehicle I built up in grad school (about 1997). I
used that bike tons for about a decade, though I rarely ride it now. The
Kalloy stem is obviously a cruder piece than the Nitto Dirtdrop, but it's

Yes, that seatstay bridge is too far off the fender line. I had already
noticed.
Let me know when you're done with the VO fenders and post some photos.

Nice work Rene.
It's a shame you had to sacrifice the pump peg to mount the center pulls but
the brakes look good. I'm working on a 60 Cheviot now, I went with the Tektros.
Spent some time today working on the fenders. I'm using the 52 VO Zepplins with
Compass Snoqualmie pass tires. Looks like
Hi all,
Thought I'd start a new thread so it's easy for others to find the
reference. Will continue the old thread as I add the fenders to my Cheviot.
I did it! Thanks to Sheldon and my fortuitous find of his article where he
states that on Mixtes, the rear brake can be placed indistinctly above
I had the VO 50mm snakeskins on my sidepull 60cm Sam and did not notice any
problems. I ran Panaracer pasela 35s under them I think. I now have them
on my Appaloosa but I am going to move up to Berthoud 60mm, which I am sure
you were all dying to know.

The only difference in my experience is in the bars the Kalloy will accept.
If you're going alba or boscoe style, you'll be fine. If you're going dirt
drop or other drop bar style bar, the Kalloy won't work (at least in my
many attempts). The Nitto is much more versatile in this respect, but if
I've had 54mm Thunderburts on my 58cm Appaloosa. They work really well. No
problems, great tires. I wouldn't hesitate to run the 55 Big Bens on it either.
But 60mm Super Moto's or Big Ones? I don't know... they might fit on the stand.
They are going to be really tight. But out in the field I wou
Thanks all! Seems to be some maybe's and some
no's. Just to clarify, my Sam is a 58. Unsure if that makes any difference.
Would anyone recommend I lean the direction of some Bon Jon's with some 45mm
fenders?

Has anyone tried to sqeeze a 60mm tire in the Joe? Looks possible, no fenders

Joe, get the '91.
Still more drink in the glass if you've never seen it. '91's the year that
hooked me.
I have friends that were hooked in '90; that catalog has a few pages of fun,
but not like the others. There's also the 1990 Mountain Bike model book -
pretty good!

The '92 was my introduction to Grant World. A co-worker had an MB-2 which
needed a service, so I went with him to the shop and picked up the catalogue.
My first reaction was "What's that bike with the weird handlebars?" It was the
XO-1 and I've been hooked ever since. I still have the 92/93/94 c
That catalog and it's predecessors going to 1991 are a big part of the reason
I'm on this forum.
'92-'94 all have the classic look.
'91 doesn't have that look but it's full of similar articles with content
that's equally amazing. A catalog with articles better than most bike magazines

Yes! I will follow the development of the Roadini closely. I have most of the
parts for a road bike. Generous clearances will always be welcome. Down tube
shifter bosses? Ok! Will they have a frame only option? Probably not at first,
but eventually, I could be in.

I proudly own and display this catalog. Bought it from Riv several years ago.
It really is more than a catalog. Really well put together. The predecessor to
the Reader. I love the cover photo with "pineapple" Bob. Not sure who the woman
is. Bob is still a cardboard artist at Riv? Yes, I echo the

As a mechanic I've worked on and installed a lot of dynamo lights from B&M,

liked the supernova stuff. It definitely doesn't win on size and

Ditto to what Jon says. My Sam has the same setup.
Tried to install VO fenders but it wasn't happening.

Steve, thanks for the insight. Ordered mine Thursday with a larger order.
Looking forward to it.
I believe some of the catalogues (or excerpts) are on Sheldon's web site.
When I placed my order I noticed the "unracer" patches are in stock. Missed out
the first time around.

CMR- that's a good point, and Ted suggests the same (Taiwan, lugged).
I understand that the issue with the San Marcos was basically the same problem
with the Bleriot: non-Riv dealers carry the bike, and can offer their own
discount pricing (undercutting Riv).
Riv could certainly do another Tai

The connectors on the Secula taillight are smaller, and they require a
different crimping tool than these would use. The connectors in this photo
resemble the ¼" connectors common in the US. The connectors Busch & Müller
uses are 2.8mm, much smaller. And these connectors only crimp onto the

Grant mentioned on the Blug that there are still a few left; I'm surprised
that there hasn't been any discussion here about it. Anyway, it's a very
nicely-produced and interesting book. It's interesting to read Grant's
philosophy at the time, it isn't much different than now. The articles on
