Shout the stains. Carwash. Spend a buck or two for some quality time with a
pressure washer. Air dry in the sun. Bob may well be your cranky uncle.

Dear Steve,
On roads, metal fenders, reasonable clearance, and slicks? Lightning will
strike first. Knobbies, rocky single-track, plastic fenders, tight trails in
the woods? Buy spares.
My Wednesday Night Lights bike goes through two Honjos a year because I set my
650b machine up for gravel
Some racks like some Tubus models have a separate mount or hole on the rack
to mount a fender to. I use those when available.

How about starting with Deacon Patricks method "it'll dry and flake off"
and then vacuum it with vacuum with upholstery attachment?

I wanted to run semi knobbies on the Atlantis for the C canal so came up
with this ugly setup. The front is a stay-less MTB fender that at least
keeps the spray off the water bottles, headset, and out of your face (but
not your shoes or the drivetrain). The rear has lots of clearance but that
I don't have much experience with disc brakes.
I'm planning to run a cable actuated disc as a drag brake on the HHH.
There was a Blug post that said to run a 40mm bracket with a 180mm rotor on the
small size tandem.
The bracket on mine measures 50mm on center for the mounting screws.

We will have to see pictures of that combo Jim S.
I saw that orange and it's wild.
I went with the Schwalbe Super Motos. They look like big fat motorcycle tires.
I'm looking forward to trying them out. I don't know how they'll ride but they
should wear really well.

Michael, thanks for the informative pic's and your experience with the 1up.
Others here seem to agree. We love ours ... didn't know if the 60 Chev
would fit but now know it will. We'll be purchasing the add-on for our 1up
single.

Care to share a photo? I wonder if it is as dirty as the hugely and
wonderfully dirty Hoss I once bought, well used. It was otherwise perfectly
sound and came at a very good price, and I sold it on later, quite easily.
I never bothered to attempt a cleaning, but I did once try to clean an

Jeff: just saw this. I mean, fenders and properly weighted raincape keep my
backside dry *during* downpours and *while* riding through deep puddles. My
feet and legs to knee get wet, but not anything above the knee (the knee is
more or less the dividing point). Perhaps you didn't see my reference
1. see what water and a cloth/sponge does. Lots of water if needed. Hose
and scrub.
2. add a small amount of mild soap if that seems needed, but this may
diminish the wax in the canvas.
3. bow to beusage.
Grin.
Or there's my preferred method: it'll dry and flake off and what doesn't,
shrug.

I have used fenders consistently since the late 90s. I ride a lot of dirt
roads without incident. My wife once got something caught in her rear
fender and broke it, but it did not cause her to fall. I find metal
fenders a lot easier to live with than plastic. The latter may be easier

We use the 1up rack with my 62cm Saluki and my wife's 55 cm Betty. One has
metal fenders, the other plastic. She has albatross bars & a large rear
rack; I have drop bars and a front rack. Or we use it with my 62cm
Rambouilet. The rack has three great advantages. First the set up is very

Here's some shots of the 52 zeppelin on a 60 Cheviot. Pretty sure the Barlow

Hi have a tan shopsack that's dirty, even by my low, low standards. Can
anyone recommend a method of cleaning? Thanks in advance.

I have a 60 cm Cheviot frame that I have yet to take out of the box.
Reading this thread has got me thinking about fenders. Are the 52mm
Zeppelin's sold by Velo Orange the largest fenders that will fit on this
bike, or could I go up to the 63mm size? Obviously, if they fit, the wider
Yes, I remember that one, too. Just goes to show that one bike per person
hardly ever works when "want" trumps "need"! Also, what fits and makes GP
happy re: a given bike should in no way govern what anyone else thinks or
feels. We're all different ... it's all good!

I remember Bike Snob posting something about riding in NYC like "Fenders,
because if you're lucky it's only urine".

David,
Running my Albastache with an 80 mm Technomic and Tiagra aero levers set up
roughly 8.5" apart and angled slightly up. No idea of this is "standard"
positioning or not. Contrary to Drew's experience, I use the hoods all the
time. Really stretches me out on my first gen 56 Sam with a
Like Deacon I experimented till it felt right. Mine: https://flic.kr/p/T1Wxs4
Caveat: I flipped my Albastache bars "upside down" which works well for me.

Something else to point out here. Tires picking up debris doesn't happen
just with fenders. One day on my Moser, the rear tire picked up a damp
stick from a chert wash and locked up the rear wheel at the brake.
