I had a Sam / Joe combo at one point. The bikes were too similar to warrant

Jason,
Great write up. I really appreciate both the tone and tenor of the
retelling and the ride.
It makes me want to travel North once again to experience your fantastic
route.

Thanks everyone for all the feedback. Really hard decision overall. I ended
up ordering the SUNXCD cranks in 172.5 and 46/30 from veloduo. I really
wanted 44/30 or 44/28 but that range was out of stock. I almost went for
the cloverleaf chainring version as they had the gear range I wanted but I

I just saw the Rivendell Big Jim today and it looks good. Agreed that this

Welcome, Hugh. The brim stiffener they put in really works.

It's the lime-olive color. We're excited! I like the color a lot. The
mermaid color is more striking to me when the frame is by itself, but
looking at pics of full builds in the wild, I feel like they're even.

Spreading the stem slightly helps keep shims aligned while sliding handle

Your stem might not need the tool.

You'll need the shims (should be 2) and honestly I hate them suckers.
They're maddening to keep in place while you slide your bar in, plus they
like to scratch it up. It can be done with lots of patience but I think
it's a pain in the patooty best solved with a new 25.4 stem. Is what I
think!
the 25.4 number on both bars is the diameter (in mm) of the bar where it
clamps in the stem. So, you will need the shim for the Billie if it was
needed for the Albatross. The stem likely has a 26mm opening where the bar
attaches, rather than 25.4mm.

I like the idea of a stem bag like the one on Leah's bike, but I would wind
up kneeing it when standing out of the saddle to pedal up a hill.

Wait, false alarm. I've seen that bar and stem on your bike, there's a shim
there that comes with the bar and doesn't separate..that section is the
25.4 measurement. I don't think you have a separate loose shim, your Billie
should slide right in there no problem.

It keeps dirt away from bottles when riding on dusty roads frequented by
horses and other live stock/ wild life..

Joe,
Are you sure? Your original response got me dialing my LBS.
Now I'm nervous again. With Candice and James @analog we tried so many
stem/ handlebar combinations and settled on the nice high stem that I
purchased while I was there. I wanted to try the Albas first, so I left

"First" in the context of my post means "before the ones you're used to
now", not that Paul invented linear pull brakes.

Without parsing the details too carefully, there is certain potential to
