The Barlow pass sure seems like an excellent tire, but being narrower it's
a change in the wrong direction. Bigger bikes probably are being used by
heavier people which needs wider tires, not taller. There are plenty of
wide off-road 650b tires available, just as good a selection as in 700c,
I would prefer a 650b tire on the 59 cm size as well. There are no equivalents
of the Hetre and Babyshoe tires in 700c - the only available wide road 700c
tires are very heavy and slow in comparison.

Except for the Barlow Pass.
And in a bit of an apples to oranges comparison, I didn't think my 26
Compass tires were any better than my (much, much cheaper) 700 x 35 Paselas.

Someone else (or perhaps Eric on an earlier occasion) opined the same,
which makes me sit up because I have been toying with the thought of seeing
whether the 559X1.5s might not fit under the crown of my Riv customs.
Can anyone confirm or, in the event, describe other experience? After all,

I was not as thrilled with the Compass 26x1.75 on my Long Haul Trucker as
the Schwalbe Kojak tires they replaced. They are better than Big Apples.
Not saying they are bad tires, they're not bad. Quite good. My personal
preference is for something even wider. Especially on that bike.

I wonder what qualifies a tire as tubby? If it fits a full 50mm/2.0 in
the various diameters, then this could be a serious dirt machine. If it'll
get a 29X2.25 in there, then it borders on the shut up and take my money
category!

The biggest influence Grant has had on me is tires. I now look at 40mm
tires as skinny. 2 tires are borderline and for anything offroad, I want
at least 2.3-2.5 and my next purchase might even be a 29+ bike (ie,
Krampus or ECR or Jones Plus) with 3 tires. If Schwalbe made a Big Apple

Wasn't it already mentioned that they were going to use curved chain stays,
assuming this bike has that new lug with fixed seat tube–chain stay angle?
I think it may be in the catalogue or an old Blug post...

There are indications that this bike is going to be mountain-ish. If so, I
really think it needs to have the capability for a true granny gear, 24T, that
you can shift from the handlebar. It doesn't have to COME stock with these
features; it just needs to give the buyer the option of adding
On the other hand, if you're getting the whole package for $1500 and it doesn't
have the downtube cable stop for the front shift cable, it shouldn't cause too
much grumbling to put one of those aftermarket clamp-on cable stops on there. A
person who knows what they want enough to demand that
Jim,
I totally hear where you're coming from with the need for lower gears, and
I agree with the comments about fitting the fattest possible tires. Where
I live, in the rural Rocky Mountains, it's a given that I'd want quite a
bit smaller chainring and at least somewhat knobby tread. But I
SOMEONE local needs to go to Rivendell and take some pics for the group! Come
on! Do it! You know you want to! We need it! Please!! It could be an early
holiday gift to the group! I'll give you a $1.
Mostly joking for the record.

Keith,
Thanks for the interesting facts you bring up. They are all true and useful,
including that there have been a lot of people who have reported front
dérailleur systems as problematic.
However, my own experience is that front dérailleur triple systems have never
caused me any problems so
Absolutely. It doesn't matter which side of the handlebar a shifter is on
as long as you route the cables appropriately. I'm sure there are some
exceptions, but I haven't come across them in my bar-end, friction-shifting
experience.

Looks good. Surprised pleasantly that it has cantilevers. Also those
chain stays look long and awesome. Are the seat stays bowed or is that a
camera artifact?
Excited to see the colors and wish I could ride it. :)

They sure look curved to me. I think it's really pretty, but you know
what might be kind of neat about this would be the ability to vary the

Looks great to me. Long wheelbase, plenty of clearance. If they are going
to be ready to ride for $1500 it's a bargain. I know they aren't going to
come in 68 cm, but what were the sizes again?

*There will be three sizes and three wheel sizes: 45/26…52/27.5…59/29. So,
twenty-six, 650B, and 700C, all with tubby tire clearance.
At least two water bottles is a MUST. That clean look quickly goes away
when you have various dorky clamped on bottle holders. I often end up
carrying extra bottles for my kids when we go on family bike rides, so for
this kind of bike, more is better.
Wondering if the 59cm will be big enough for
