Thanks for the comments regarding tires. That is an important point for me.
I would like the ability to ride 50s. Bob, I appreciate the kind offer to
help out with camping recommendations. I will keep that in mind as the
trip planning progresses.

I rode the GAP-C&O last summer on a Hunqapillar. The C&O, while my favorite
half, was pretty bumpy. If you want to do more adventure rides, I'd suggest
the Appaloosa because you'll get the clearance for fatter tires and
fenders. It will ride fine on pavement. Have fun on your trip!!!
P.S., feel
Having owned both, I would say the major differences are tire width, chain stay
length and brake style. And of course color. I know the Appaloosa is billed
more as a touring bike, but I haven't heard of anyone feeling the Sam to be too
flimsy for touring!
Currently with an Appaloosa for tire wi

Thanks to all for your responses. Upright bars make sense for me. Ray, I
will ride the Kenda Kwik Bitumens on the complete build for awhile and
more than likely move up to at least 50s. As I mentioned earlier, I was
leaning toward the Appaloosa. This discussion has helped confirm this as

Marc,
How large of a tire do you want to ride?
The Appaloosa will take a considerably larger tire.
There are lots of choices these days in high quality tires in really fat sizes.
There is very little handicap in running 55mm tires and they really make a bike
more versatile.
They are both
i think either of the bikes is totally adequate for what you plan to do
with it, in terms of loads and off road riding. never ridden a joe, but i
have a sam and a hunq and for argument's sake ill pretend the hunq is a lot
like a joe. i think what ed said about drop bars is really important.

Roberta and Jeff, thanks very much for the mention of Gravel & Grind.
Unfortunately they are several hours away from my location. Should I find
myself in the Frederick vicinity I will definitely stop in. Roberta, happy
hunting.

I was making a similar choice a couple of months ago and ended up with an
Appaloosa - having ridden neither and mostly from reading what folks posted
in this group.
Deciding factors for me were (1) I was never going to use drop bars and (2)
I'd always have at least a light load, i.e. the front/
I'm 64 and have a Chevoit with the long chainstays that keep your heels
away from rear bags. Very comfortable ride and it does not feel 'slow'.

Marc,

MD? Gravel and Grind in Frederick, MD is a dealer and fairly close. I
took a 3 hour trip to visit them. They have a dozen bikes built up to test
and will let you ride them all day long on local trails. Ask for James.

i've owned a sam, and only test ridden a joe. the joe felt like a fairly
fast cruiser to me, and the same felt more like a sport touring bike-more
nimble but still stable.
if i had to choose between both, i'd go appaloosa - tire clearance,
canti/v-brake posts/and longer top tube to put an uprig
I don't own either but seem to recall one of them (forgot which) had an
upper limit of 215 pounds. No longer see it listed though . . . if that is
a factor maybe investigate further?

I haven't ridden either of these bikes (they both sound appealing) but I
believe one of the distinguishing characteristics is the chainstay length ;
the App has longer chainstays and therefore longer wheelbase which accounts
for the plusher ride. But.don't take my word for it. I'm sure if y
Marc,
Couple of months ago I went to Riv to test ride Sam. Loved the bike,
didn't like the orange color. Couple of weeks later went back to take
another look. The more I looked at it, I started liking the orange :)
However, after riding both Sam and Joe for an hour each, I decided to
order
Hi Marc,
If you are in the DC area, Gravel and Grind is in Frederick, MD and they
might have something in stock for you to try.
