I think with slicks you would get way less pebbles thrown up into fenders. From
my experience. I only hear pebbles about one time per year with slicks and
about 1.5 cm fender clearance all around

I have 559s on my Sam with cream SKS 45 fenders and 38mm Little Big Bens. I
put salmon pads on the 559s and they work sufficiently. Things are a bit
close in front. I hear pebbles scraping inside the front fender
occasionally. I have SKS 50 fenders on my Cheviot and never hear that noise.

Added guess: Hilsens were getting more expensive and with longer lead times,
and other lower cost canti Rivs were in the pipeline. It made sense for Sam to
morph into the MIT version of Hilsen.

My guesses:
1. It was Grant who convinced Tektro to make the R559 calipers in the first
place, so I think he feels motivated to stick to his guns about the value
of these brakes and continue to spec them on his bikes.
2. Production costs. The fork crowns and seatstay bridges already have
Getting back to first principles here: Can anyone tell me why Riv ever
switched from cantis to calipers on the Sam Hillborne? Cantis (or v-brakes)
just make so much more sense for this bike, IMO.

I swapped my R559s for Paul Racers because the R559s intruded upon fender
space. Centerpulls do not.
I thought the Pauls had better lever feel, because they are stiffer than
the R559s. Braking performance was only slightly better than R559s, though
(both brakes on Kool-Stop pads).

I'll add to the conversation and say that I have too have a caliper Sam. I
love this bike! Given the choice if I had to do it all over again I would
prefer a canti version just because of the added tire clearance. Mine came
with the R559's which are decent brakes but I ended up swapping them
Loved my R559’s with salmon pads on my blue Sam.
I ran 42’s with fenders on it. No problem. I see no reason to pay all that
money for Pauls.
I had Pauls on a Bleriot once and switched to the R559’s and was much happier.
Cleaner look and braked better. No more judder. Easy setup. No fuss. Less
I have the Tektro/Silver (Riv branded and shinier version) 559s on 3 bikes and
they work fine for me. I use either Kool-Stop or Aztec pads which grip better
than the stock items. I had Paul Racers on a Saluki and did not like them. I
now have my first centerpulls (Mafac) and so far really like
Paul Racers are the way to go. I've fit switchback hills under them, didn't
ryt o put on fenders though.,

Max,
I tried converting a 1985 Trek 400 to 650b using the Tektro 559 brakes. I
filed down the slots on the front to get them to work (barely). In
retrospect I should have tried the DiaCompe 750 long reach center pulls
which have 78mm of reach. Those brakes get mixed reviews but they sure have

Racers are listed 57-67, R559 55-73.

Is the reach on Paul Racer the same as Tektro 559?.. (I've an old bike that
I'm converting to 650b and the Tektros seem to need an extra 2 mm or so.
So, I'm debating between splurging for the Racers or getting the frame and
fork modified to accept cantilevers.)

My sincere thanks to you all for your comments. I think I'll go ahead with
the purchase. In the short term, I'll put kool stop pads on the Tektros and
see how they feel. The consensus seems to be that the Paul's are a slight
step up in power, but are more work to set up (fine with me) and

My four year old Sam has Tektro 559 brakes and they work fine with fenders
and 38mm tires. But I can confirm what Drew says: the Paul Racers are a
step up. They have a nicer feel (smooth and solid is the best description I
can provide). The additional clearance they provide over
Good call about brake pads, I don't have my R559 bike anymore and forgot I
changed them. So my comparison about Racers and Tektros having about the same
braking power correlates to replacement pads on the Tektros.

Mine is my favorite bike. If I were to go to one bike, that would be the
one. The Tektro calipers I'm using are ok, but Paul centerpulls would be
better I'm sure.

I have a Sam with the Tektro brakes and they are not great brakes but
adequate and only after a pad change. They look good, nice sculpted lines
and the finish of the brake is well done. Super easy to set up which is a
bonus. The price is more than affordable so they have that going for them.
I had the stock Tektros on my Sam. Found them lacking. I'd been using
Cantis for years, and this was my first forray into sidepulls in years. I
think the long arms resulted in too much flex. They were easy to adjust,
however. Easily the easiest brakes I've used to set up and maintain. But in
Perhaps Paul stop you better than Tektro but my only comparison is that I
had the 47-57mm reach Tektro and they stopped just as well as the Paul
Racer, easier to setup as well.

Paul Racers are my brake of choice, when I get to choose. I have them on
two bikes, one of them a 650b rando with 42mm Hetres. They fit those tires
fine, but I wouldn't bet they'd go much wider.

Yeah I had 700x50 schwalbes on mine. No fenders, but not that tight.

I have bikes with each on them right now. The racers are superior in stopping
power, the perceived hand fatigue on long descents, less flexy so there’s a
perception of more direct power transfer... get some compressionless brake
housing as well.
With both I clear 650bx42 and with Paul’s have
Brett,
I forgot to mention I have a canti-Sam, & I am happy it's a Canti-sam. The
racers are fun and cool looking, but the Paul neo retro (wide cantilevers)
are what I prefer. They feel more solid and the power is better than the
Racers IMO.

I'm afraid I'm not much help with tires. My Racers are currently covering 30mm
rubber with acres of clearance remaining, and I think 35 is the most I've ever
used with them. That's skinny stuff for those brakes.

Joe, that begs a question! How fat were you able to go under the Paul's?
I find the Paul's to have an industrial chic that is great, but the reason
I keep buying their brakes is that they work great. My experience with
Tektros has been more mixed, but they're a great value. I'll start with the
Brett, I had a caliper-braked Homer that came with the R559 caliper brakes
that I eventually swapped for the Paul Racers. The R559's were great
brakes, but flexy due to the long arms - I think some people would consider
this beneficial added modulation, and some would consider it annoying. You
