I have managed to snag a couple of decent condition Raids on eBay for a
pretty good price - the last one was 17 Euros plus shipping. The trick I
find is to set your location to France, and more seem to pop up. They
aren't NOS, but you have a couple of options in terms of improving the
hardware.

Where can one purchase Mafac center pulls? Are they long reach enough for 650b?
Mafac is long gone, although old ones can be had on ebay. The one you
want for a 650B bike is the RAID. Generally the Racer, the one you'll
find in the old parts bucket
If it isn't a Paul or Racer I wouldn't switch to center pull however there
is a better side pull option than the Silver Tektro. Those VO Grand Cru
long reach side pulls are the best out there IMO.

Maybe they can be had for cheap from the carbon shops' dusty bins since they
probably think they are an antiquated technology.

Mafac Racers were OEM equipment on French bikes for years. If your area had
a concentration of French bikes during the early 70s bike boom, there will
be discarded Mafacs in every shop's junkpile, every bike kitchen, every
scrapyard.
Midrange Racers are the most common Mafacs, by far. You might
Ebay. The raids are quite long.

I agree with don't fix it if it's not broken, and also agree with Bill's
merino undies. But 40 yrs on my old Weinmann's, I've been through every
possible brake shoe combination that would fit, and found the Kool Stop
Dura cartridges were the very best (especially in front) because of their

The two bikes I currently have set up with Dia compe centerpulls are great.
Plenty of stopping power, excellent modulation. I'm planning to put a Mafac
Racer on my fixed gear this week, as I tried installing a fender under the
front sidepull I had on there and no go. But just putting in a little
An under-rated gift idea that most frugal people can't possibly justify
themselves: a few pair of wool undies. Riv is out of the MUSAs in
everything but XL but it appears they have plenty of the Devold ones. I've
used both, and since trying the Devold ones maybe 4 years ago I only wear

T
+1 on Patrick comments. I think the Dual Pivots are the best out there for
caliper types. I replaced the Dia Compes CP on my 75 Schwinn Voyaguer II
with Tektro R559 (from RBW). Much better than the CPs and easy to set up.
Use the $$$ some where else.
