I use the netscreens and they work good. The low end runs about $500 per
applicance. You can get dial up clients that work on WinXX. They also act
as a firewall for your site.

You may have to try a different Adaptec card. I had an Adaptec 7850 on
board scsi that refused to work reliably. I eventually just put in a
different Adaptec controller. I do not think that Linux supports the 7800
series Adaptec cards very well.
