Does anyone know if by default Linux will see Linux and try to FTP for some
type of file sharing, backup, or whatever?
Both systems are behind a firewall with very few ports open at all.
Any help is greatly appreciated.

I had not thought of that. I will look into that possibility although I
keep up with virus definitions regularly and perform weekly scans of all
PCs on the network.

Besides looking though the standard logfiles... /var/log/maillog and
possibly your apache logfiles
