Following suggestions from this list, I tried modprobe loop but it says
Have you ever considered compiling a kernel yourself? :)

I am pretty sure that my system is fully patched as far as non-kernel things

suggestions as to what might be wrong with:
1) mkinitrd bombing with the loopback device error.

I am trying! :) My question (2) was about an error I was encountering when
trying to run make menuconfig in an attempt to compile the kernel!
Anyways, I figured out why make menuconfig was bombing, I did not have the
ncurses-devel RPM installed. Now that I got it installed, make menuconfig

Thanks for the reply Trond. It was ncurses-devel that was preventing make
menuconfig from running. However, I still do not know why mkinitrd is
bombing.
Try look for this in bugzilla, and report it if you don't find it.

Thanks again Mikkel. My root file system is on SCSI. I am now compiling
2.2.17-14 with the SCSI drivers built-in, instead of as a module. Hopefully
then I can boot and function with the 2.2.-17-14 kernel.
Thanks again for all your help,
