First of all, disable all the start-up services that you don't need by using setup
command. Install chkrootkit and tripwire program to detect if your machine has been
compromised or not?

Hi,
I'm a bit of a linux newbie. Out of the box, what should be the first things I
do/learn/disable to secure my box? Is there anything I could run or look out

I guess this
te or apt-get).
There are a bunch of Linux newbie sites on the internet, although some of the better

Hi,
I'm a bit of a linux newbie. Out of the box, what should be the first things I
do/learn/disable to secure my box? Is there anything I could run or look out
for to indicate a hack of any kind?
I guess this is asked a lot. If so, could anyone point me to any relevant
resources?
Thanks

I am running RH8 with Wu-ftp daemon. I fount there is nowhere to log the
wrong logon information. So, I wonder if somebody want to guess the password
of a ftp user where I can get it?
I checked xferlog and secure logs, no info for this.
Thanks

Hi Ed.
I didn't find it confusing, but would like to know the answer too. :)
I'm guessing you could put an entry in the hosts file of the internal
boxes to use a local IP for the external name?
I have this problem, but don't mind using the internal IP from inside.

Here's my situation:
Hosts on the internal network can access the Internet by masquerading

The Internet can access a web server residing on the internal network,

I have recently installed a DSL line. It is connected to a Linux (RH

I have changed both to /bin/false to improve security - is there any
