Jim, thanks for the suggestion. Unfortunately it doesn't have a receive LED, only a bar-graph which is also used for transmitting. The optoisolator idea has merit though. I have located a point in the radio which changes voltage, but only by about 1/2 V and it is very sensitive to loading.
