All my library is in FLAC at the moment. Works fine with my Vortexbox
server. But given the virtually non-existent portability of FLAC files
to mobile devices (esp the car) I'm thinking of converting to Apple

You have a lot of company - many of use maintain 2 libraries; 1 for use
with the squeezebox (FLAC) and one for portable usage (mp3).
With cheap multi-terabyte drives available both for serer use and

I've used ALAC since I got my Touch just over a year ago. I've never had
any real issues with doing so, although I do use a laptop for a server,
so I've got plenty of computing power for transcoding. And yes I have
vinyl rips as well as DVD-A rips in 96/24 and never had a problem

Sounds like you're on a Mac. If so, I have an Applescript that can
convert FLAC to iTunes (you have a choice of a "lossless", "aac",
"aiff", "mp3", or "wav"). You can send the output directly to iTunes
or to a directory. If interested, see:

Another way to automatically add to iTunes is to place the folders
containing the files you want to add into a folder created by iTunes
named "automatically add to iTunes" or something like that, found under
the folder "iTunes media".
I always do this without iTunes running, so I don't know how i

okay, thanks. I had vague memories
No, you remember correctly. iTunes used to create duplicates. I'll
have to try this with my library and see how it goes.

h, haven't done this step in a while, but I've used itunes since
about 97 or 98 and was always able to use this approach (probably

Saying that SanDisk has supported FLAC and large SDHC cards for years is
a little too sweeping. For example, my SanDisk Sansa did not support
either FLAC or large SD cards out of the box -- I had to install
Rockbox to get those features. On the other hand, SanDisk does support

My experience:
I use apple lossless, itunes, SB3/Boom and an iPhone
I use iTunes to manage all media (any new rips I add to the "Auto add
to iTunes" folder, but mostly I use iTunes store for new stuff coz it's
a damn sight easier)
SBS keeps itself in sync with iTunes
Itunes transcodes stuff to
